With apologies to all the wrestlers and grapplers I’ve coached over the last few years, I think I’ve been teaching a less effective version of the swing single hitherto…π
I’ve always emphasized the more traditional version of the technique, i.e., level change-penetrate-pivot, elbow on the mat, shoulder behind the opponent’s knee, and drive forward to shelf the leg.
But check out how quickly Vito snags RBY’s foot with a different type of single during their NCAA championship match earlier this spring! Blink and you’ll miss it….
And that’s why I’ve also included a vignette in which Cary Kolat (one of my all-time favorite wrestlers and coaches) seems to be detailing exactly how Vito evaded RBYs defenses and scored.
Henceforth, should we now call this the ‘snake single’ instead of the ‘swing single’??? I find Coach Kolat’s serpent metaphor really useful as an instructive tool π
Speaking of instruction, we do have classes tomorrow (7/2) at Horsetooth! Get some training in before the holiday, and expect to refine your single as showcased here, along with more leg riding…
Training schedule for Sunday, 7/2:
Kids/Family Wrestling, 10 a.m.
Teens/Adult Wrestling, 11 a.m.
Girls/Women only Wrestling, 12:30 p.m.
