Grip Strength Training

Wrestlers and grapplers–be sure to focus on your grip strength during your off-season workouts!

Wanna be able to move opponents with your ties? Consider rope climbs, as showcased in this vignette by none other than 3x NCAA champ Spencer Lee. The speed at which he can move in both the vertical and horizontal planes is awe-inspiring (and certainly illustrates why he is so powerfully effective in his neutral setups…).

Don’t have a rope system like this at your gym? Visit your local park and improvise. You can use hand-over-hand on the bracing poles on swing sets and the rails on the monkey bars to train up/down and side-to-side movements, respectively.

Regarding the latter, just be sure to experiment with keeping your elbows around 90 degrees, as Spencer Lee does in the second half of the video. This will fully engage your grip strength as you move horizontally across either a rope or monkey bars!

And be sure to join us for wrestling training tomorrow (6/11) at Horsetooth–hope to see you on the mats.
